Seminars on bronze and non ferrous metals

Who did not want to make a real bronze arrow head when you were a kid? Or recreate one of these really fantastic sardic bronzetti? My seminars are most versatile and we can do just about anything, given it has something to do with non-ferrous metals...
Here you can get the whole experience of all the necessary and fascinating facettes of one of the oldest tradea of mankind. Next to the practical experience, the theory will not be missed out on. Along with a solid introduction into the behaviour of metals and heat treatment, there will lots of room for discussion archaeological, socio-economic and mining history. Every participant will get detailed instruction of how and why metal casting does work.
The aim of seminars is to understand and appreciate the enormous skills and talents our ancestors posessed in the field of metal working. Below is an incomplete list of topics, for inspiration only:

• Seminar on lost wax process - Cire perdu process

  Seminars on the lost wax process are very adaptable, as nearly every item can be cast in this way. From jewellery, knife handle, plastic to celtic coining die; all these objects you can create yourself here.
  Participants will make their own model, after discussing their option with me. A clay mould will be produced. The responsibility of the participant will be the execution and monitoring of all the necessary tasks, such as drying and firing the mould, melting the metal, preparing the mould and casting. The nature of this seminar asks for a minimum period of four days to allow for all steps in the process to be undertaken carefully.

  Seminars on permanent moulds

  A great many implements can be cast with this technique. For example axe-heads, daggers, arrow, heads, pendants etc. The participant will create her/his own stone mould using reconstructed tools like chisel, graver, hammer and grind stone. The tools and the stone for the mould will be provided. Sandstone moulds can be produced within one day, these seminars are among the shortest possible, since no other firing process than the melting of the metal is necessary. The melting and casting will be carried out by the participants.

  Seminars on metal working

  After casting the next challenge awaits. That has been true in ancient times and is still true to today, e.g. in art foundaries. But where nowadays angle grinder, drilling machine und such like are utilized, prehistoric people had to be very inventive. Since not even steel was available, the choice of tools was rather limited. How then were unfinished castings worked? How do produce a brooch, if you cannot buy the wire for the needle? Can you make your own wire? Its questions like these we will deal with in great detail, and we will find the often surpringly simple techniques to employ do work well enough.

  Seminars on woodworkig tools

  Over the years I have been working on many projects, thus creating a huge toolbox full bronze age wood working tools. I wonder what can be done with those? Or how they were made? What do you need to know about the fantastic bronze age wood working skills?
